We’re giving a nod to International Children’s Book Day, celebrated every year on April 2nd. Here are our favourite kid’s books that were made into films…

BUT Remember kids, it’s ALWAYS better to read the book first!

Matilda – 1996..

Written by Roald Dahl in 1988

What’s the plot?

A schoolgirl finds out that she has special powers and uses them to punish her selfish parents. She also gets revenge on her cruel headmistress until her more kind and caring teacher adopts her.

Differences in the Movie

No breaking and entering – In the book, Matilda never goes into Miss Trunchbull’s house. Also in the book her brother isn’t portrayed as a bully.

Our Movie Rating – 4.5 Stars

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – 1971 and 2005

Based on the Book:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (1964)

What’s the plot?

A poor boy who has lived on soup for most of his life. He finds one of only five golden tickets in existence that permit him and grandfather to enter Willy Wonka’s secret chocolate factory!

Differences in the Movie

Well, for a start Roald Dahl (apparently) disliked the 1971 adaptation because of its wild differences, which included huge emphasis on Wonka, in addition to turning Slugworth into the film’s baddie. The 2005 Johnny Depp movie is more true to the book, but with a little extra Tim Burton dark magic.

We couldn’t possibly compare the 2!

What’s the plot?

A boy finds out from a giant that he’s a wizard. He then goes to a magical school where him and his homies spend most of the term fighting a dark lord without a nose.

Differences in the Movie

J.K. Rowling was hugely involved in the creation of the films but there are differences. Fans have NOT taken lightly to these changes.

The Wizard of Oz – 1939

Based on:

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum (1900)

What’s the plot?

Young Dorothy goes from back and white landing in the technicolour world of Oz. Her new land is inhabited by munchkins, witches and horses of a different colour. She makes friends with a brainless Scarecrow, a heartless Tin Man and a cowardly Lion. Together they head to visit the wizard, who she hopes will help her get home where black and white isn’t so bad, if your family are there.

Differences in the Movie

In the film, Dorothy’s trip to Oz was just a dream, but the book shows it as a real adventure. Also in the book, her ruby slippers are silver and the reasons why the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion are without brains, hearts and courage are revealed. So if you want to know more you have to pick up the book!

Our Movie Rating – 5 Stars
