Mothering Sunday Origins..
Need help remembering when the big day falls? It always takes place on the fourth Sunday in the festival of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday.
Technically, (in the UK at least) the celebration is Mothering Sunday and not Mother’s Day. Initially, the «mothering» aspect of the occasion had no connection to mothers in the way that it’s celebrated today.
The origins lie in the Middle Ages, when children who had left their families to work in domestic service were allowed to go to their home, or «mother» referring to church.
Further down the line, the date took on an extra celebratory aspect. It became a traditional occasion for the fasting rules of Lent to be relaxed, allowing a long-awaited feast.
How it transformed
The American festival of Mother’s Day, which is held later in the year has no religious links. It was created in 1907 by Anna Jarvis. She held a memorial for her peace activist mother who treated wounded soldiers in the American Civil War.
In 1914, it had become so popular that President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day a national holiday, stating
«A public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of our country».
One funny mummy shared her thoughts on what she would like for Mothers Day and it isn’t a pink cushion with words of love stitched across the front, it’s simply a wish list including – PICK YOUR DIRTY CLOTHES UP FROM THE BATHROOM FLOOR! 😉 read the full story
Whatever you do for the special lady in your life, whether she is your Mum, Aunt, Nan or just somebody who means the world to you, enjoy time together and share the love.
